What Is A Podcasting | Definition
According to Wikipedia: A podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The term podcast, like broadcast, can refer either to the series of content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also called podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster.
The word “podcasting” is a portmanteau combining the words “iPod” and “broadcasting”. Podcasting is a form of audio broadcasting on the Internet. The reason it became linked with the iPod in name was because people download podcasts (audio shows) to listen to on their iPods.
If you have an MP3 player, such as an ipod, you can go to places like iTunes and download music to your iPod. You can also subscribe to a “feed” which means every time you open up your computer, iTunes will automatically download the latest audio in the series you have subscribed to. You can then listen to it on your MP3, computer or even burn to CD.
A podcast is not simply a link to an MP3 file that your customers can download off your Web page. While it is certainly possible for someone to listen to your recording on their iPod or other MP3 player, just putting the MP3 up does not make it a podcasting.
A podcasting uses the same system (an RSS feed) and you can download interviews etc that you have created. In fact, people can download your podcast through iTunes. It’s not just for music.
Podcasting allows individuals to publish (podcast) radioshows, that interested listeners can subscribe to. Before podcasting you could record a radio show and put it on your website.
Another words, Podcasting is the syndication of audio files using RSS. Podcasting works the same as a standard RSS feed reader or news aggregator, the only difference is that the feed you subscribe to contains an audio file in it. Instead of reading content in your RSS feed reader or aggregator, you can listen to the contents of your feed using a reader or aggregator that supports podcasting, or you can listen to them on an iPod or similar device.
