Google New & Creative Favicon Redesign for Web 2.0
![]()
Many people noticed a small change on Google Address bar for a new favicon. A favicon is a small image or graphic that is generally used to reflect the identity of a web site. You can find in your browser’s location bar and next to bookmarks. It’s now the second “g” in Google, with a light drop shadow as in this screen shot.
Google’s favicon is hosted at www.google.com/favicon.ico with 16×16 pixels image, a standard size for favicons. Google replaced the upper-case “G” in blue border, green and red borders with a lower-case purple “g” in a rounded corner rectangle.

Google’s new favicon is less cheerful and comforting but it makes sense: the small g is a symbol for infinity (?). A googol (10100) is just a poor approximation for the huge amount of information that needs to be indexed, organized and made useful by Google.
You can read official explanation from the Google Blog:
Some people have wondered why we changed our favicon — after all, we hadn’t in 8.5 years(!). The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale better to some new platforms like the iPhone and other mobile devices. So the new favicon is one of those, but we’ve also developed a group of logo-based icons that all hang together as a unified set.
